Sure, people have made steel rings, boxes that all come apart and all leave a mess in your home.  To make things worse, all the fire starting materials are left out for children to get into, and usually left all around the fireplace.  The area around the wood stove is one of chaos; tools, brushes, papers, matches, kindling, etc., are not only unsightly and dangerous, in addition, this mess if left unattended could attract rodents into your home.
